Rockingham County Schools Celebrate Virginia Farm to School Week

Cultivating success, the school meal program in Rockingham teamed up with local farmers to highlight local products that were served on the menu in all schools on Thursday, November 13, 2014.  The menu consisted of:

    • Fresh Turkey Tenderloin from Virginia Poultry Growers Coop, Hinton
    • New White Potatoes from Valley Farming LLC, Clifford Rohrer, farmer, Dayton
    • Cabbage for Coleslaw from Valley Farming LLC, Clifford Rohrer, farmer, Dayton
    • Fresh Apple from Showalter Orchard and Greenhouse, LLC, Timberville

Each Rockingham County School celebrated this event by:  Inviting local farmers to participate in the meal program on the 13th ;  Decorating serving lines and cafeteria eating areas to commemorate the event; Having staff and/or students dress as a farmer;  Educating students about how foods are grown;  Middle and high schools involving students from the Future Farmers of America (FFA) student club.

According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture, “the Virginia Farm to School program highlights the diverse products produced in Virginia and emphasizes seasonality, farm family heritage and land stewardship, which provides students with a greater appreciation and knowledge of agriculture in Virginia.  Schools have been working with local farmers to incorporate more Virginia Grown products on school menus to improve the health of our children and support local farms.  Building connections between schools, students and agricultural producers throughout Virginia provides economic opportunity for Virginians and healthier options for our children.”
