About This Site

Dear Students, Parents and Community Members,

Dr. Seth Muraskin (Principal of Spotswood High School) and Mr. Eric Baylor (Principal of East Rockingham High School) invite you to join us as we prepare for the upcoming movement of a large portion of Spotswood’s students to the new East Rockingham High School in the fall of 2010. This WordPress blog site will allow your questions about the transition to be posted for Mr. Baylor and Dr. Muraskin.

Mr. Baylor and Dr. Muraskin

Eric Baylor and Seth Muraskin

On a bi-monthly basis, starting September 16th, Mr. Baylor and Dr. Muraskin will meet in the large commons at Spotswood High School to discuss issues and answer questions posted on this blog site. The goal of these meetings is to reply to questions in a unified and concise manner. We are planning to provide information regarding the 2010-2011 school split to parents, teachers, students and the general public. Both principals are working to make the transition a smooth one for everyone involved. We understand the importance of this change for all stakeholders.

These unified meetings will take place on 9/16, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/11,  and 12/9 of 2009 from 3:30-4:30pm, along with 11/25 at 1:00pm. The schedule for 2010 will be posted at a later date. We welcome your questions and comments either through this site or in person.

Yours Truly in Blazer Blue and Eagle Red,

Seth and Eric

I would need specifics here to give you a specific answer. Holding hands is not a problem. Small PDA would need to be defined.

  2. student from shs going to erhs says says:

holding hands and small Pda was allowed at shs will we still have the same guidelines?

  3. Eric Baylor says:

Dear student from shs going to erhs,

All the rules will not be exactly the same at East Rockingham High School as they were at SHS. However, county policies on drugs, tobacco, weapons, etc. are the same in any county school. There will be minor differences in rules like tardies to school, tardies to class, but expect the rules at ERHS and SHS to be much more similar than different. We (teachers and administration) will be in contact with you frequently in the first few weeks of school to get the rules across to all. Expect orientation meetings, class meetings and home rooms to be great learning places for the new rules and regulations.

  4. student from shs going to erhs says:

Will all the rules be the same at eastrock as they were at spotswood how will we know what is acceptable at east rock?

  5. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear David,

We will hire a School Nurse later in the summer. I am expecting to hire the nurse at the end of June.

  6. David says:

Will you be hiring a School Nurse and if so when will that position be filled?

  7. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear Nancy,

Once all current RCPS employees have secure positions we will hire outside of the system. During the initial hiring phase in April the vast majority of ERHS hires were internal transfers. Now, the situation has opened up considerably because those internal teachers have found positions. Thus, the majority of ERHS hired throughout the summer will be teachers from outside the RCPS system.

  8. Nancy says:

Will there be any hiring done from outside of present RCPS employees? I was told there is a hiring freeze and you can only choose from present RCPS employees. If this is true, will this possibly change to give ‘new blood’ a chance to be employed by RCPS?

  9. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear David,

All the school lights are electronic eye beam controlled which means they cut off 10 minutes after anyone leaves the room. Also, we share a Central Plant with River Bend Elementary meaning we did not have to build two separate facilities. We have installed water-cooled high efficiency chillers in our physical plant. We have the ability to only heat and cool the areas of the building which are used after hours. This saves money and is more efficient than heating or cooling the entire building. All these aspects are positive for the environment as well. In conclusion, East Rockingham High School and the entire School Division is committed to increasing the efficiency of its schools; thus, minimizing negative effects on the environment.

  10. Eric Baylor says:

    Dustin,

The Cross County coach’s name has been submitted to the Central Office. He should go before the Board on May 25 for approval. We are still involved in interviews for the Wrestling Coach.

  11. Dustin Mallette says:

when you have determined either the cross country coach or the wrestling coach could u please post the names so i can see who they are?

  12. David Hoye says:

    Mr. Baylor,
Has the new school purchased any environmentally efficient products? If so, what are they?

  13. Eric Baylor says:

We are interviewing this week for the CC position. We hope to go before the Board with that coach at the next School Board Meeting on May 11. The Wrestling Coach will be hired by May 11 or will go before the Board on May 25. We have not begun interviews on either as of now.

  14. Dustin Mallette says:

who will the cross country coach and the wrestling coach be at ERHS?

  15. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear Skyler,

I will email Stephanie Failes today with several of the uniform combinations. She will put them on the blog site in the next few days.

    Thanks,

  16. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear ERHS student,

We will have a swim team next year. As a matter of fact we have already bought equipment for swimming. We plan to swim at Massanutten during the same times as Spotswood. We have not added green to our school colors. We are black, red and white. We do have an off green (sage) tile combination in the building both on the floors and on the tile walls.

  17. East Rockingham Student says:

There are rumors saying we will not be having a swim team and that green has been added to our colors are these true?

  18. Skyler says:

    Dear Eric,

I would also like a preview of the band uniform as well please.

    Thankyou.

  19. Eric Baylor says:

    Dear Mark,

I’ll send you what I have tonight on your personal email.

  20. Mark says:

    Mr. Baylor,

Could you also send me the sneak peaks of the uniforms as well?

    Thanks

  21. Eric Baylor says:

    Stacey,

I have sneek peeks of band, football and cheer uniforms. I will send them to your personal email this afternoon.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  22. East Rock Parent says:

    Hi Eric,

Just wondering if you will be posting any “sneak peek” photos of any of the ERHS uniforms for athletics, band, etc. anytime soon. Love this site! Thanks for all your efforts!

    Thanks,
    Stacey

  23. Sonya Davis says:

Thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this informative site…..And thanks to Eric Baylor for answering all of the questions! After spending some time on the site a lot of my questions have been answered. Hope to see a schedule soon for tours thru the new school!! We are excited for next year! Go Eagles!

  24. Eric Baylor says:

ERHS is slated to open in the fall of 2010. I have spoken to Dr. Fenn about this situation and she has confirmed that we are full speed ahead in opening East Rockingham in the fall of 2010. I am counting on it as well.

  25. Ron says:

I keep hearing rumors that the new school may not open next year
Is there any truth to this rumor?

  26. Eric Baylor says:

The trailer park behind Lowes is in the Harrisonburg City Schools System. Students living there will continue to go to school in the city of Harrisonburg. Redistricting in Rockingham County only concerns students living in Rockingham County.

  27. Jo Jack says:

Is it true yall will be bringin the trailer park behind lowes to spotswood?

  28. Eric Baylor says:

At present ERHS will have a Boys and Girls Soccer Team. We will play in the Shenandoah District of Region B of the Single A classification. Numbers will dictate the amount of teams we will have. I hope we have enough students for JV and Varsity programs in both Boys and Girls Soccer. We will cerainly have equipment and uniforms in hopes of equipping 4 total soccer teams. I need you to recruit as many players as possible for ERHS. Many programs starting soccer in Single A have boys and girls playing on the “Boys” Soccer Team. Once the numbers expand boys and girls teams split and play independently.

  29. SHS Parent says:

Will ERHS have a boys soccer team? What will happen if there is not enough response to field a team? Who will they compete against and how is that determined?

  30. Eric Baylor says:

See the guidance counselors at Spotswood. They have the form letter template you can send to Dr. Fenn. This template is for present juniors (rising seniors). It outlines the grandfathering process for Spotswood/ East Rockingham students for the class of 2011.

  31. Marta Hart says:

For students that are districted to ERHS and want to send a letter to Dr. Fenn how do we do so?

  32. Seth Muraskin says:

No and Yes. Harrisonburg is not part of Rockingham County Public Schools. No students from Broadway will be going to Harrisonburg High School. There will be some students from Broadway who will attend Spotswood because of redistricting. Those students should already know who they are.

  33. Brianna Elsen says:

i was just wondering, there have been rumors going around saying that some students from broadway well be going to harrisonburg and some students well be going to spotswood since this school is opening up soon.Is this true?
